Great work in completing your interview! Following up with a thank you note is not required but is a great way to further demonstrate your interest in the role and show your appreciation for people’s time. A thank-you note should be thoughtful, personable, and sincere. Here are some tips on how to write the perfect thank-you note:
The Greeting
Your opening should be cheerful and simple. “Dear ____” or “Hi _____” should suffice. Then, you will want to follow up with a sentiment about how much you appreciated them taking the time to speak with you.
Example) Dear _____, Thank you so much for meeting with me to chat about your Disney experience and the Disney Internship role on your team.
The Memory-Maker
The next section of the note is where you will really start to talk about the role or what you discussed. It is also where you can leave that lasting impression. That is why we call this section “the Memory-Maker.” This is where you can relate what you discussed to your personal experiences. Sometimes, the person you spoke with may have conducted multiple interviews in one day, so use this section to remind them of who you are by calling back to something specific you discussed. This is also a great opportunity to bring up points that you may not have gotten the chance to during your interview. Remember, this is your chance to leave a little bit more of your personality behind!
Example) I loved hearing about your Disney career and your experiences in software development. It was so reassuring to hear about how your interest in video games helped you on your Disney journey. I’m excited about the coding aspects of the role; I have experience with coding my university’s website with software such as Ruby and JavaScript. I think my skills could be a great addition to the team.
The Closer
While short and sweet, the end of your note is incredibly important. In this section, you want to reiterate how excited and grateful you were to meet with them. It also doesn’t hurt to try and make a personal connection here. Even though this is the end of your note, be careful not to be too casual. Try to end with a friendly, but professional tone.
Example) Thank you again for meeting with me. I look forward to hearing about next steps and learning more about this field in the future. Enjoy your upcoming vacation!
Congratulations! You have created a thoughtful and memorable thank-you note to send to whomever you met with! Whether you send your note through snail mail or email, be sure to send it in a timely manner after your meeting. The person you met with will appreciate your authentic and personal thoughts and this may help you be on the top of their mind for future opportunities!
